fly away on my zephyr i feel it more than ever and in this perfect weather we'll find a place together
This was his first winter. Well, first winter that he could recall.
It was all very new. The glittering ice that covered the lake's and river's, and flurry of snow that made you frozen to the bone, and most of all; the wintery wonderland that lay in each clearing, just waiting to be spoilt by Bion's snow dancing. Yes, he was just that awesome, he'd made up a special dance he'd promised himself he would dance every winter until he died. Unless he forgot. Or lost his memory again. Both of which were quite likely for Bion.
Thoughts of snow dancing were quickly pushed to the side as he bounded through no mans land, slipping and skidding with each leap. Finally, he began to skid to a stop. His body quivered as he slid toward a frozen pool, trying with all his might to stop before he reached the ice. The snow ran out from under his paws, and he was soon struggling across the ice. He attempted to balance himself, pulling a face as his bulky body finally betrayed him, and he crashed to the ice with a deep thud. He lay there, dazed, blinking a few times. The ice seemed strong, and thick, but he was afraid it would suddenly crack and he would fall to his death. He couldn't swim.
He shuddered, whether from fear, the cold, or both was unobvious. Lying on the ice, his fur matted with snow and water, he wondered what it would be like to die. To be clinging to that last moment you had before slipping into nothingness. His brow furrowed. He didn't want to drown; he didn't want to die. And he didn't want this ice to crack!
Bravely (or what he thought was rather brave), he slowly hauled his body from the icy surface, getting onto all four paws cautiously. He wobbled a bit, and he squeezed his eyes shut, clenching his jaw. Carefully opening one eye at a time, he realised he was okay, and soon forgot his fear, bounding and sliding to the shore. Finally, on solid, snowy ground once again, he let out a content sigh, a goofy smile stuck on his maw as always. He shook himself dry, and wondered what his next adventure would be. New people? New places? Who knew. So he would wait, adventure usually found him. Actually, he had a suspicion that adventure and danger was following him.

Es was running, as usual, but seeing as the snow was so ridiculously thick she was more bounding from snowdrift to snowdrift. Her fur was thick with clumps of snow, the winter coat shaggy and long but just as tawny and dappled in its brown colouration as ever. Her eyes were vibrant and green as always, scanning the winter wasteland in all of its beauty.
As usual, the path she was taking had been taken before. She wondered why she wasn't bored of this valley yet. She usually got bored of similar surroundings pretty quickly. Then again, it was her first winter here, who knew what the new year could bring?
With a last leaping bound she made it out of the trees and stopped instantly upon seeing another figure. Large, muscled, black and white. Her heart sputtered painfully out of sudden fear, until she read the body language. She relaxed instantly. This wolf was younger than Duke. This wolf had different markings. This wolf wasn't Duke... the wolf who had ruined her whole life. She stayed frozen though, wondering why this other wolf had such a striking duotone resemblance to such a monster.

a lifetime of crushes and broken dreams
Bion's green eyes lit up vibrantly when he saw a wolf bounding through the snow toward him. A goofy grin sprung onto his maw, his playful nature always seemed to get the best of him. Unfortunatly, not everyone always wanted to play, and sometimes it landed him in a bit of trouble. His smile faded soon, though, when he noticed the look on her face. It was horror, then she relaxed a little, but she still seemed afraid. Bion didn't think he was a very scary wolf, he'd never really noticed his large physique enough to use it to his advantage, and if he did know how muscular he was, he would carry on being the clumsy brute he was.
He whipped his ears back out of habit, whenever someone seemed a little uneasy, he found that showing them a little respect made them feel better. He had alot of experience at making others feel better. He liked cheering people up, it made him happy when wolves around him smiled, it was such a good feeling when everything seemed well. He gave the female a friendly smile, tilting his head to the side. He watched her curiously, with his big green eyes, wondering why she was acting strange.
Esmerelda was a very pretty wolf, but it hadn't occured to Bion yet. He didn't really take much notice of what a wolf looked like, he was more of a personality guy. He liked the whole process of getting to know someone more and more, until you feel so close to them that you feel they know you better than you know yourself. He'd only ever felt that with Bandit, the closest thing he'd ever had to a mother (that he could remember).
'Hello,' he chirped, straightening his head to get a better look at her. He sat down, his body completely relaxed. He waited, wondering if she would explain why she was acting tense.
if you've got it all figured out then what is there to shout about

Es shook her head slightly, telling herself not to be so silly. She was hardly the type of wolf who took things too seriously, and she found her heart had returned to its usual pace. No danger. She smiled back, grin spreading across her face both playful and slightly sheepish. He was just a large, muscly black and white wolf. That was all. There was no hint of anger or wish to inflict pain in those bright green eyes, she could see with her own.
So she padded over a little more, shaking her fur a little but it did no use as she ploughed into another snowdrift and then fought her way out again with a few extra jumps. Soon enough, the tawny female was quite close to the other male, but smiling still. He was sitting, obviously not wishing to impose any physical threat on her. And with a quick, subtle intake of breath she had determined not only that the air was freezing but he was a Stars wolf. They were usually pretty harmless if you were nice. His eyes held questions, though, that much was clear.
"Hey," she started, edge of her black lips drawing up into a lopsided grin on her slim maw as she shook her head a little. "Sorry about that," she started vaguely, rolling her bright forest eyes. "You reminded me of someone kinda scary. I'm Esmerelda."

take a good look around does life really suck are we just complaining Bion felt relieved when the look of fear vanished from Esmerelda's eyes. He gave her a half-grin, but it faltered slightly when the word 'scary' left her mouth. He titled his head, looking slightly hurt. 'Do I look scary...?' he asked, slightly worried. He didn't want others to be afraid of him. What if more wolves mistook him for this scary wolf that looked like him? Why did he look like a wolf that made Esmerelda react in a way like this anyway?
He shrugged it off, it was probably nothing to worry about. She just got mixed up, a simple mistake. His normal, goofy grin returned to his maw, all doubts and worries vanishing from his face. 'It's a pleasure, Esmerlda,' he grinned, and gave her a nod of the head. 'I'm Bion.'
He stretched his forepaws out idly, raising his rump in the air. Then he shook himself, and straighten up once more, smiling at Esmerelda. 'So what brings you out here, Esmerelda?' he asked curiously, making a distant note at the back of his mind that he should go and see Bandit pretty soon. He hadn't seen her recently, and he should probably check that everything was okay. He sighed contently, life felt pretty wonderful at the moment. i hope this is making some sense[/blockquote]

Es felt her paws sink in a little more, and then her rump as she sat down. Blood was still pumping through her veins from her run. She watched Bion slightly, how carefree he looked and how nice that smile looked. She relaxed instantly, feeling her heart return to a normal, comfortable pace. She took a few deep breaths, as if the air was a lot clearer here.
"Out here? I'm a loner hereabouts," she rolled the 's' on her last word, just for fun, smiling at it. Those bright green peepers of hers were glancing around, stunningly emerald against the pure white of the snow, and she noticed his were almost exactly the same. Vibrant, light, hopeful. Happy. Like she was. "I travel around, really. How about you? You smell like a pack wolf," she teased slightly, smiling lopsidedly again.

well open up your mind and see like me open up your plans and damn you're free
He always loved meeting new wolves, but there was something particularly enchanting Bion found in Es. He wasn't sure why, he'd only just met her. He let out a thoughtful hmm in a quiet tone as he studied her face. A loner? he thought to himself. Normally he was slightly suspicious of loners. Bandit had told him that he shouldn't trust anyone but a fellow Dancing Star. Bion hardly thought that was fair. What if there were good loners, who just didn't want to be in a pack? Sometimes it was good to be trusting, wasn't it? To let others in. Yes, he was sure that letting other people in was the only way you could make more friends to love. And love made Bion's world go round. He also thought it was rather unfair that everyone was afraid of the Falling Moons. He had no grudge against them, and he'd never witnessed their power, but all the same... No wolf could be completely bad, right? Bion smiled at this. He liked the prospect of there being atleast a little good in everyone. It made him feel warmer.
Esmerelda's voice dragged him out of his thoughts as she started talking again. He laughed lightly, and gave her a glittering smile. 'Correctamundo! I live with the Stars', he laughed again, this time at himself. 'I've lived with them f-' he paused, tripping over himself, '-for as long as I remember...' he gaze trailed off, behind Es and into the distance, his mind suddenly filled with thoughts of Rose and Raiden. 'Hmm...' His smile returned as quickly as it had dissapeared. He looked back at Es, his vibrant self brought back after the few seconds of deep thinking. He pushed thoughts of his lost memory to the back of his mind, he's worry about that later. 'Have you always been a loner?' he asked curiously, keen to distract himself.
look into your heart and you'll find love [/blockquote]

Es gazed at him thoughtfully, wondering what his expression meant as she settled in the snow carefully. She listened to his words. The stars wolves? As long as he could remember? Her face contorted very slightly with this new information.
"No... at the old valley, I used to be... uh, I used to be a Stars wolf too. Dancing Stars," she said vaguely, still focusing on him, concentrating. He looked like her age. So if he'd been in the Stars when he was a pup, and he was a pup when she was a pup (different litters, same year), then surely she would've known him. She'd known everyone from the old pack.
"Funny," she said, wondering when he'd joined on. Maybe she did get his age wrong? She smiled anyway. "But when the earthquake hit, and everything and everyone disappeared, I followed my heart and became a loner. It suits me much much better. I like to travel, and live, and not be so tied down to others... usually." She smiled brightly again.

open up your mind and see like me, open up your plans and damn, you're free
She used to be a Dancing Star? He frowned, surely she would remember him from when they were pups if they had both been Dancing Star pup's when they were little. Unless...No, maybe it was just too far back for her to remember. Yeah. His frown dissapeared, having assured himself that he never had, and never will be a Falling Moon. He nodded slowly, smile growing. Being a loner sounded like fun, it sounded like it would suit him. Only, he couldn't leave Bandit, and he cared too much about the pack. Plus, he wasn't sure that he'd last very long without a pack.
'Do...do you ever miss having a family?' Hm. Family? For him it seemed like a slightly surreal word. Clouded in mystery and confusion. He didn't actually know who his parents were. A chunk was missing out of his life, probably the best chunk. The very first months of his life, just...gone. It was such a horrible feeling, it made him feel a little hopeless. He wanted to grow up knowing who his parents were, who he was supposed to be.

Esmerelda watched his expression curiously, deeply interested suddenly in the direction of his eyes and the shape of his lips as he thought. He looked like he'd been through a lot, but was very good at surpressing it. Maybe that was a trait they both had in common, then. Her ears flickered backwards slightly at his question, and she padded closer to him and sat down, looking at him thoughtfully with her bright eyes.
For once in her life, Esmerelda decided to open up to a total stranger. It was rare, but occasionally Es realised that life was too short to pretend all the time.
"I used to have three brothers, the most beautiful mothers and a big strong father. Kazu was my older brother, and Justyn and Pitt were my younger brothers. My mother's name was Midnight and my father's name was Caerwyn," something unexplainable flashed behind her eyes. "They were the Alphas, and everything was fine. Until my father... he got sick. He stopped functioning like we were used to. He changed- for the worst. It was very hard on my mother and as if that wasn't bad enough..."
She stopped, took a deep breath and tried to relax her shaking muscles. She turned slightly away from Bion.
"Sometimes I wonder if the earthquake ever really happened. The whole valley was turned upside down, the Moons and the Stars were ruined," she whispered. "Wolves running around like headless chickens, and I lost my family. All of them. So I ran."
She turned back to Bion now, almost urgently.
"I can't ever stop myself." she said quietly. "From running."
She shook her head and shrugged. She wasn't going to explain about Kinaki, and surviving and trying to forget. You can run and you can hide but the past is always there. She shuddered slightly, took one short intake of breath and pulled herself together.
"Please talk about yourself for a minute," she muttered. "What about your family? What happened to you in Empyrean Valley?"

a long night spent with your most obvious weaknesses you start shaking at the thought
As Esmeralda began to talk about her past, a small feeling of curiosity awoke inside him. Why was she telling him all this? She didn't seem like the kind of wolf to open up to strangers. He held her gaze for a while, and it struck him that she must of been holding all this in for a long time. His face dropped ever so slightly. The thought of Esmerelda being lonely, with no-one to talk to made him feel guilty, for some reason that probably only made sense to Bion. He was too caring for his own good sometimes. He listened intently to her story, hanging on her every word. He was a very good listener, but everyone often thought he seemed too childish and naive to even sit still for long enough. In truth though, he wasn't very childish at all. Sure, he acted childlike at times, but he had a sharp mind. Sharper than he got credit for.
As her background story ended, Bion had a strong urge to give her a hug. I can't even stop myself. From running. He sighed gently, pulling his gaze away from Es, and looking up at the fast melting waterfall, deep in thought. 'I'm so sorry...About your family and everything. I can't even imagine-' Ofcourse he couldn't imagine what it was like to lose his family, he couldn't even remember having a family to lose. He looked back at her sadly, his words leaking out of his mouth before he had a chance to stop them. 'I don't remember my family. Infact, I don't remember anything from childhood. So, to me, my life began halfway through the earthquake began. A lost pup, caught up in a sea of madness. The fear and horror I felt was just-' he stopped, forcing back tears. 'I was so confused, I couldn't remember anything or anyone. I just sort of...woke up, like I'd just been born. I didn't recognise anyone around me, and I wasn't sure if I was going to survive. My leg hurt terribly, but I did all I could think to do, and ran.' He paused to collect his thought, wondering if he should tell a stranger this. He felt like he could trust her, though. 'Well, I fled, and managed to stay alive. I caught up with a rapidly growing band of stragglers, a mix of Falling Moon and Dancing Stars. They had to work together, they had to bare each other, because they all wanted to survive. I met Bandit, a Dancing Star. We got on well, and being a year older than me, she's been like a mother to me since that day. Well, kind of. I'll never really accept her as a parent, because I know that somewhere our there, my parents are alive. I hope so, anyway.' He didn't really want to tell her about Rose and Raiden just yet. He would probably tell her in time, when he got to know her more. For now, anyway, that would have to do. He gave her a slightly forced smile, hiding his emptiness and confusion behind his eyes, where he hoped no-one would find it. He didn't want anyone else to feel sad for him. This felt like one of those things you needed to face on your own. He didn't need anyone else getting caught up in his problems.
you are everything i want 'cause you are everything i'm not

Esmerelda listened curiously to his story, feeling little bits of her natural armour piecing themselves together again around her heart. With any wolf that she opened up to, this would be the way it was. She'd let her guard down for a matter of moments, and then build it up again just as quickly. She hadn't met someone yet who waited around long enough for her to drop the walls around her heart and keep them down, but she was fine with waiting for now.
"At least it's all behind us now," she murmured, in a tone which showed that she knew it was no consolation, but it was fairly optimistic all the same. "This is your home now, and at least you have Bandit. My brother Justyn survived as well, but I only found him here in this valley a year after the earthquake. And he'd become a Moons wolf."
She shook her head. "Very depressing stuff," she commented drily, but managed to force a broken smile. She looked at Bion curiously, and laughed very slightly. "Sorry to go all... nostalgic on you. It happens sometimes."

forget what we're told before we get too old
Bion's dragged his gaze to the ground. He nodded slowly, although he didn't his past was behind him at all. Infact, he was living in the past. He was so intent on finding out who he had once been, maybe it would be better if he left the past alone, and concetrated on right now. It was doing him no good, thinking about the family he might of once had, he was forgetting to live. What if there was a reason he had lost his memory. Like, something really bad had happened, and it was better that he couldn't remember. He sighed quietly. He didn't want to think about it anymore.
Her optimism made him smile. He liked being around Esmeralda, she reminded him of himself in a strange way. 'It's okay,' he said with a small laugh, his face changed istantly, lifting, in a way that only Bion seemed to know how to manage. 'Happens to me quite a lot. Well, kind of,' he said, pondering. He couldn't miss something he couldn't even remember having, could he? Bah, all this thinking was making his head sore.
i need your grace to remind me to find mine

Esmerelda leapt up slightly, shaking off the sad thoughts as she did. Let it go, let it go, she chanted to herself absent-mindedly, smiling and feeling her mood brighten. It came naturally to her, to ignore the past and focus entirely on the present. As she did so, she began to notice Bion more. Quite well-built, and that duotone stiking black-and-white were the reasons she'd seen Duke on first glance. But she wasn't sure how, now that she could really see the softness of Bion's features and the overall lightness of his presence, how she'd ever seen Duke in him.
"Sorry to have brought you down," she said softly, and spontaneously pressed her wet nose gently into his cheek at the point where his black lips should spread into a smile. "The past is the past, in my opinion, and life is for the living not the forgiving."
She took a small breath as she stepped backwards, wondering how he'd react to that affectionate display. She bounced back on her heels slightly, tawny pelt catching in the wind and whipping around her as she smiled once again.

this innocence is brilliant, i hope that it will stay this moment is perfect, please don't go away i need you now
Bion's cheerful smile stayed in place for a while, until it faltered slightly at her touch. He blinked, suprised and slightly confused. Suprised because he hadn't been expecting it, and confused because he didn't really understand why. Looking at her, he felt a strange sensation in his stomach, which made him feel extremely odd. He didn't know what to make of it, it confused him even more than Esmerelda did. After a few moments, his smile returned, looking completely natural. It wasn't, though, he didn't know whether to smile or frown.
He decided he quite liked this new feeling, and his smile soon felt comfortable. It sort of...made him feel warm inside, like he'd never felt before. Hmm...
"Es...Do you think you could help me?" he frowned, deadly serious. He wanted to tell her about Rose and Raiden. He felt like he could, and he trusted her.
