quit crying your eyes out
quit crying your eyes out
and baby, come on
isn't there something familiar about me?
the past is only the future with the lights on
quit crying your eyes out
and baby, come on
It was strange, really, how often Mae found herself alone, but even more strange was the fact that she found herself hating it. She was a relatively social wolf, but normally she savoured time alone. Time to think, time to breath and be herself. Of course, it was not unusual for a Loner to be alone, the key was in the name, but there seemed so few Loners around No Man's Land these days. No exciting new wolves to meet, nobody to talk to. Heck, she even missed the petty arguments she used to have with stuck-up females. Perhaps it was because it was almost summertime, and everyone was busy and preoccupied with pups, too much so to be wandering around No Man's Land. It was a dangerous place, in all honesty. Far too dangerous for newborn pups and first-time parents.
Mae smirked to herself. She was glad she didn't have pups. They were far too clingy and time consuming. The responsibility almost made her shudder.
Stupidly, Mae had completely lost track of where she was walking and found herself a little disorientated when she pulled herself from her train of thought. It was careless, she shouldn't have lost track of her direction. It took a few moments, but she soon realised where she was. She'd lived out here for a long time, so she knew the place like the back of her paw. However, she visited this place very rarely.
Her eyes soaked in the world around her, absorbing every detail of the precarious cliffside and the stream that bubbled alongside it. She smiled a little, deciding it was a good place for a rest. Breathing in deeply, ready to sigh contently, her nostrils suddenly filled with the stench of the Dancing Stars. She grimaced a little, breathing out slowly and wrinkling her nose up. It wasn't that she had something personal against the Stars, but the smell of comradeship and jolly enthusiasm was almost too much to bear.
Now that she thought about it, she did remember this place after all, but the last time she'd visited was a few winters ago, and it had looked a little different back then, all covered in snow and ice. If she recalled correctly...Ah, yes. There is was. The small, damp cave was suddenly apparent and she felt an odd emotion wash over her. On her last visit, it had been remarkably cold. Much too cold for a wolf to be wandering around in at night, so she had sought the refuge of a small cave. She'd been young and reckless. Foolish, you could say.
She smiled a little at her arrogance. Sure, she had been young, but she was still the same wolf. Foolishness and all.
Her mind simmered with the memories of that one cold winter as she headed toward the river and settled herself alongside it. She was both hungry and thirsty, having been out all day looking for something to eat. Unsuccessfully. She dipped her head and drank until her belly was filled with water, but sadly empty of rabbits or foxes. She lay her head down on her paws and stared pensively at her reflection. She would have been sleepy had in not been for her stomach rumbling and aching. She felt a little distracted today, resulting in carelessness not unlike the type she had exibited all that time ago.
Same old Mae.
