Here I am This is me I come into this world So wild and free
Esmerelda knew it- her time had finally come. The pregnancy had been unexpectedly easy, despite the fact she was sure she had more than one pup inside her. She had been feeling butterflies for a long time now, but finally her time was here. The pain was worse than she had expected, surely worse than what she'd been told, but she found herself lying there afterwards with three scrambling little pups snuggling against her. When she finally found her breath again, she feebly howled. She needed Bion.
As the tawny mother regained a little enery, she looked down at the little ones. Her little ones. She could hardly believe that she had done it. Instinctively she licked them clean, led them to her tummy, and watched them feed. She had no idea why or how she knew what to do, but she was glad she didn't need to be told. From what she could see, it was a girl and two boys. Their markings were fairly difficult to distinguish at this point, but she hoped that they would grow into beautiful individuals. She leant back, exhausted, wondering where Bion was.

Esmerelda's howl was not unexpected, but it still caught him off guard. Somehow, he thought some instinct might have kicked in when she was ready to give birth; something that he could feel in his core and made him rush to her side before she needed to call. It was silly, of course, when he thought about it after wards, but he felt guilty none-the-less.
Luckily he wasn't very far away from the dens because he'd been loitering relatively close for a while now. That meant no visits to No Man's Land to see Rose or the pups. That could wait. Rose needed him now. The moment his twitching ears caught her feeble voice his muscles tensed instantly and he paused only for a few brief moments out of shock and worry before he broke into a powerful run. His mind was so clouded with emotions that he could barely think straight, but he came to his senses when the familiar smell of prey filled his nostrils. Skidding to a halt, he lowered him belly to the floor and crept forward. There wasn't a moment to lose, not while Es was giving birth, but he knew he needed to bring something; anything. He couldn't imagine how exhausted she'd be, but every second that he was here was another second he wasn't with his family. An infinite amount of possibilities filled his mind about what the pups would look like, how many there'd be, what gender they were, but he pushed it all away to the back of his mind because it was useless right now.
Bion wasn't the most agile of creatures, but he was downwind from the rabbit. It seem luck was on his side. Teeth bared and muscles tensed once again, he lunged forward, catching his prey by surprise. He clamped his jaw around it's neck in one swift movement and was running back toward the dens before he was entirely sure it was dead.
It was too late. He'd missed it. Dread filled him as the unfamiliar scent of birth lingered in the air. Perhaps it was best that he'd missed this bit, maybe she'd wanted some privacy. It was an unconvinced attempt to comfort himself, and entirely selfish too. After scrambling into the den and catching sight of his mate and pups for the first time, he nearly dropped the rabbit in surprise. For a few moments he stood, dumbstruck, unsure of what to do or say. The pups were so perfect that he wasn't sure he could stay upright for much longer, so he hurried to Es' side and dropped the limp ball of fur next to her. "I, um...rabbit." He was still watching his pups. Their pups. Three of them, perfectly healthy from what he could see. "Well done," he breathed, overwhelmingly proud of her. "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry." He shook his head and then turned to Es, laying next to her and nuzzling her with his maw.
"How are you feeling?"

Es had indeed wanted some privacy, but she was so thankful to see Bion as he came in. She felt as if she were swelling with pride when he looked at the pups, almost suprised but mostly in awe. She herself had barely given herself time to notice how miraculous they all seemed. She smiled and leant against her mate, relaxing.
"Thank you so much for the food. I'll be sure to eat that as soon as I'm hungry," she sighed, contentedly. She felt a little odd, a bit empty, but she knew that nature would do it's job and that her body would soon return to normal. She could hardly remember what she felt like before she had her pups inside her. "I'm good. I'm tired, but I am so so happy."
She smiled up at him, blinking her emerald eyes.
"Don't be sorry, you silly wolf," she shook her head. "You're here now, just as I wanted. The birth went fine. And I'm sure if I'd needed help there are plenty of females within yelping distance."
She snuggled up to him a little more, glancing back at the three little ones.
"So what do you think?" she asked, but she already knew the answer.
