as if you had choice.
It wasn't that he didn't remember getting here, it was why he suddenly found himself here and, confused, remembering that he'd walked all this way from the stars border. Why had he come here anyway? He wasn't too sure to be honest, it just felt right to be up here. He felt a little more free.
There was something inside him that was missing, and it pained him to think about it. He longed for it more than anything...even though he didn't know what 'it' was... He sighed softly, as the wind picked up and brushed through his golden fur. Where was he meant to be? He gazed out across the lands, a strange feeling growing inside him, one he'd never felt before. He felt like he didn't belong anywhere.
Okay, he was loyal to the Stars, and he loved the wolves with all his heart, but something didn't feel quite right. He didn't remember being a pup, he didn't remember who his mother was, or who his father was, or if he had any siblings. Amnesia, but he'd only just realised; the first few months of life were missing. He felt a spike of fear and dread pulse through him, and he suddenly felt afraid. He wasn't sure exactly WHY he was scared, but everything fell out of place, and he wasn't sure what he was meant to do anymore. He felt cut off, anything could of happened in those months. Bandit might be the bad guy. The moons might be his family.
But surely not...?

Rose was still bloodied and battered from her fight with Myu, the claw marks across her maw and the bites in her shoulders and neck were throbbing painfully. She hoped she wouldn't scar too badly, she was vain enough to hope she'd still be beautiful. Her heart ached terribly as well, for she was beginning to feel as if Justyn was the only wolf in the world she'd be left with eventually. She was sad because she knew she would get to him eventually.
So she arrived at the cliffside, realising that as she'd wandered out of the fog she had not gone down the cliffside. Wrapped in her thoughts, she arrived at the top of the waterfall and felt hopelessness descend on her. She felt like crying. But she wouldn't. Just in case, of course, an enemy came along- the Moons wolves weren't weak in front of anyone.
That's when she became aware of her surroundings, of everything. Her vision wasn't so blurred by hate now, although she hated Myu and her father with a passion still, she was beginning to feel numb and yet acutely in tune with everything.
Did the world always sound like this? In her head there was a dull screaming echoing about, it was unnerving but she didn't care for it. She was just fascinated and terrified and hopeless all at once, all rolled into one bruised and bloody body.
She shifted around and saw, very suddenly, Bion. A dozen metres or so away. He looked slightly angsty and very still. This unnerved Rose; he had always been so beautifully full of life, always happy and always making others happy. Running about all the time, getting in everyone's faces and annoying everybody with his infectious laughter- it could not be Bion.
And yet, it was.
Very suddenly, one of the shattered bits of her heart (one of the biggest pieces) snapped back into place, she could feel it settle into it's brittle place again. Her breath stopped altogether for a moment and she gasped for air before continuing. Was this a mirage? Had she actually been killed by Myu and this was the afterlife? Did it all look exactly the same? But no, she was in pain, this couldn't be death.
"Bion?" she finally whispered. She knew it wouldn't be loud enough, so swallowed against her dry throat, moving forwards slowly. She was so afraid the beautiful mirage of her son would disappear. "Bion is that you?"
Please tell me I haven't gone crazy.

It was strange, actually. Half of him felt like that voice was completely perfect, like somehow it was right, if ever a voice could be right. But the other half of him was afraid, it reminded him of something, but he didn't know why; and it unnerved him greatly. A surge of adrenaline pumped through his veins, and he spun around to stare at the female who was watching him. He could feel the emotion in her voice wrapping round his mind, frustating him. He knew that voice, he knew it so well! His emerald eyes were brimming with tears, his mouth wavering as if he was going to say something. The right thing, what he should say. But the words didn't come out, he didn't know what to say all of a sudden, and that explanation he was clinging to escaped him, and left him in the dark.
He shook his head violently, the tears flying away, and he put on a stern face, something he wasn't used to. His brow creased, and he searched for the right words. 'How do you know my name?' he croaked, but as soon as they left his maw he realised he shouldn't of said that. He didn't know who this female was, but he forced himself to think straight. He inhaled silently, the scent of falling moon sent a chill down his spine. He breathed in and out shakily.
'Who are you?'

Rose's slightly better heart lurched painfully, a worse pain than any wound Myu could ever inflict. Because she knew, her mind told her over and over- screaming it at her, that it was Bion standing in front of her. He was bigger now, for she'd missed out that first year in his life. He was an adult, if a young one.
But somehow, he didn't know who she was. She didn't need to control her expression, and nor could she have if she tried, for the horror of this realisation was plain across her features in a snap second. He'd forgotten that she was his mother. She couldn't cry, in her shock.
Subconsciously, as always, her mind was telling her the right thing to do. The smart thing to do. If he didn't remember her at all, what did it matter? He was alive, he was standing before her. So what, that he stunk of Dancing Stars- what had she said to Justyn? If I could have Raiden or any of my pups back, it wouldn't matter if they were loners or if they were Stars wolves. Just to know they were alive would be enough. The words burned hot in her memory.
She didn't want to admit that she was right, because the emotional level of this was too much. Her beautiful boy Bion looked confused and wary, and it didn't suit him. He was supposed to be happy, always happy. Like he used to be. Don't scare him anymore, Rose told herself.
She took a deep breath, her face finally relaxing into a more friendly expression. She blinked back the tears she didn't realise were forming, and when she opened her eyes again she felt more ready.
"I'm sorry if I startled you," she truly was apologetic, but her expression remained confused. Had he hurt himself in the earthquake? How had he ended up with the Stars wolves? "I'm Rose..." she had to stop herself from adding your mother to the end of it. "I used to... know you. From the old valley. Empyrean Valley, do you remember it?" she couldn't stop her soft mothering tone from escaping the formality of the conversation.

Confused and startled as he was, watching the female made his heart break in two. His face dropped even lower, but he forgot what he normally did in these situations, his mind was too muddled up. Tears began to fall freely now, not from his own frustration or because he didn't understand, but because he could see this female was hurting on the inside. What was worse, was that she felt familiar...Like she was meant to be in his life, but wasn't.
He bit his lip to prevent bitter sobs escaping his mouth, struggling to understand why he was upset. He was crying for everything, everything he'd stopped himself crying for in the past, he just couldn't hold back anymore. As the words left her lips he couldn't help but feel even more desperatly lost. I used to... know you. From the old valley. Empyrean Valley, do you remember it? Empyrean valley? He never even heard of it. Surely Bandit would of mentioned it, and how could he trust this female, he didn't have a clue who she was.
He shook his head, eyes still hauntingly confused and brimming with salty tears. He didn't dare open his mouth to speak, he didn't trust himself. He wasn't sure what he should do, so he watched the female until he couldn't take it anymore. He did what he usually did when he or someone else was sad, something he hoped would work on falling moon wolves as well as it did on dancing stars.
He bounded towards her and nuzzled her gently, the wolf equivelent of a hug. He finally found his voice, and croaked sadly, 'I'm sorry...I don't remember anything.'

He was crying. That wasn't right at all. Rose wanted to run forwards and embrace him, make him stop crying and make him happy again. Bion had to be happy, that was all that mattered now. Then as if he'd read her mind, he was running towards her and a second later nuzzling her. She'd hadn't felt so complete for a long time.
But then she realised that he was trying to comfort her. As if she needed real comfort at this kind of time! She thought he was in need of comfort- he was the one crying. His personality hadn't changed much, then, this was such a Bion thing to do. Pushing aside his own rare woes and comforting someone else who hadn't been so happy in a long time.
She nuzzled him back as he croaked at her, and her heart swelled up with the enormity of the situation. "It's okay," she replied softly, and was surprised at how true those words were. Even if she was hurting in her heart, she was also unbelievably whole again. "You might remember, in time. Want me to tell you what it was like?" she asked, fearful that he would back away or end the reunion too soon.

Bion breathed in the females scent incedentally, and another sharp pang of recognition flared through his mind. He drew back instinctively and stared at Rose. Why couldn't he remember? It was so FRUSTRATING. He frowned, feeling anxious, and tilted his head once again. His eyes swelled with tears once again, but they were for him this time. He felt so helpless and foolish. It was obvious this female meant more to him in those three months, but he just couldn't see why, even though it was probably glaringly obvious.
He settled a little more, though, at her question. Perhaps hearing about his life in those three vitally imporant months would bring back some memories. He felt the memories were painfully important.
Cheering up slightly he nodded and sat down by Rose. 'Please.'

She moved back a little to give him space, best not to push the motherly act too far for now. If only something would snap in his head. He looked so sad, it just wasn't like him! This was very frustrating, but Rose smiled sadly at him. Frustration could catch up with her later.
"The valley was called Empyrean Valley, like I said before," she began gently, casting her own memory back. Those memories she'd pushed to the back of her mind that always tried to claw their way forwards again. "It was very beautiful. Well, half of it was. That was our half, the Falling Moons."
He might as well know the whole truth. "We'd won it in a great battle. Duke was the Alpha, he was a very proud and angry wolf. But he got the job done. The better territory was now the Moons territory. You were born the following spring. You had two siblings, Tammer and Blake. Blake was very rarely happy, and Tammer had bad legs but a lot of determination. And you, Bion. You were always happy."
Rose swallowed roughly. "Your father's name was Raiden, and he loved you a lot. Then there was an earthquake and... everyone got split apart and lost. Bion... how did you end up with the Dancing Stars?" Rose asked, confused. She could smell it all over him.

As Bion listened, more and more questions gathered in his head, he tried to remember them all and listen to her story at the same time. Is everyone afraid of Duke? How do you know him? Can you tell me more about my siblings? Are they still alive...? Where's my father now? What was he like? What about my mother? How do you know all this? There were others, but he'd forgotten them now. As he waited for a place to blurt out his millions of questions, Rose linked her question on at the end of her story. A little miffed, because he knew he wouldn't be able to remember all his questions.
His gaze trailed to the sky, deep in thought. His mind drifted back as far as he could remember, gathering his thoughts as best he could. Dreamy, white clouds drifted by, and his mind focused on the one point in time almost a year ago. Dust raked his throat, making him cough and choke noisly, although it was nothing compaired the the loud rumbling coming from deep underground, and the pitiful screams of wolves in pain or fear. He shuddered, gaze drifting back to Rose.
'Well...I found myself caught in the middle of complete panic. The ground was trembling and wolves were wailing all around me. I lay in shock, looking around me. But as I moved my head, it began to throb violently, and I felt sick. I couldn't remember what had happened, or where I was.' He spoke quietly, in short sentances, speaking the snipets of information as he tried to remember them in order. 'And then...This wolf wobbled along, she looked quite a bit older than me; two, maybe three. She was battered and bruised, and I could see she was holding all the pain in by the way her eyes dug into mine. She gasped in pain, and I got up to race over and help, but a jolt of immence pain ran up my leg and I collapsed on the floor again. I wasn't sure how to help her, but she was covered in blood and cuts, I wanted desperatly to help. But apparently I was in worse shape than her, and I don't know what I looked like, but she must of thought I was in pretty bad shape from the way she looked at me. I tried to turn and look at my injured leg, but the pain i felt when I tried was too immence.' Bion paused briefly, searching Rose's face for a reaction, then continued. 'The next thing I know, the wolf is infront of me, her voice was shaking as she spoke to me, and I suddenly remembered everything she'd said to me while I was staring blankly at her. She said I'd broken my leg, and then fainted in from shock or pain, or both. I felt a bit stupid for fainting, because I was sure she was in worse shape than me. She tried to help me up, and after a few failed attempts I was on my feet, hobbling through the aftermathe with her support. She asked me about my family, and what my name was, but I couldn't reply.' Bion's eyes glittered with tears, and he looked away from Rose, unable to hold her gaze, he squeezed his eyes tightly, and let the tears fall freely. 'But I didn't know who I was-' his voice cracked. '-I knew my name was Bion, but that was all I could tell her. I didn't know who my family were, and I couldn't remember anything that had happened before the earthquake. I tried to tell her, but I couldn't get the words out, I felt like I was choking... Nothing much happened after that, the wolf, who's name I learnt was Bandit, didn't ask any more questions, I could see she was concentrating on finding away out. We soon caught up with a small huddle of wolves, they were planning on heading to the other side of one of the collapsed mountains, and then seeing what they would find. They all looked pretty cut up, but none of them seemed bothered about it, either. The small huddle soon became a large gang of the survivors. They sent the two wolves in the best condition out to try and find any wolf that wasn't dead so that they could leave. We didn't have to wait very long, the two scouts came back with three wolves, an adult and two pups. I didn't spend much time with the pups, I liked Bandit's company for some reason unbeknown, even though she was usually quiet and deep in thought. Bandit and I stay at the back of the group of surivors, they barely remembered we were there. It was hard for me to keep up with my leg, and Bandit didn't seem too eager to travel with the huddle anyway.
The pups seemed wary more of Bandit than me, they didn't know what to make of her. One of the pups names was Taku, and I swore I recognised him from somewhere, but whenever I asked, he seemed reluctant to tell me with Bandit around...' A hopeful look fell over his face, and he looked up at Rose eagerly. 'Do you know who Taku is?' he asked quietly. Deciding to carry on with his story before she answered so that he wouldn't get sidetracked, he began to tell her of when they reached Caden valley.
'We soon reached the new valley, and the wolves split into two halves. The wolves I disliked, and the wolves I did like. It was quite convenient, actually, and I followed Bandit and the wolves I liked. They were friendly and they weren't spiteful or rude like the others. I found myself in the company of the new dancing stars pack. I didn't know why, and still don't, but for a while most of them seemed wary of me. Apparently I smelled of the bad wolves,' he finished with a shrug, hiding the fact that he was actually deeply bothered by the fact that they didn't seem to like him. 'They all know me though, now, and I don't smell funny anymore.' He added with a cheery smile, waiting for Rose's reaction to his story. He was quite proud he'd remembered it all, actually.

Rose listened very carefully, ears flickering and managing to keep her expression unreadable. If he was truly very happy in his new Stars life, then she'd let him be -she wanted him to be happy, after all, and maybe he was more Stars material than Moons- but it still hurt a little. He wasn't under her wing, she hadn't done any of the nurturing or protection he needed in the time of crisis. Instead, some random female Bandit had done. Ugh.
Still, she sighed and smiled slightly. He was well, now, and obviously healed since his wounds of the earthquake. She frowned. Well, he was healed except his mind.
"Taku..." she began, thinking carefully how to phrase it. "Was in the Moons pack. His mother, Iris, had an unfortunate encounter with a previous Stars wolf. Taku was one of the results. I think he's the only one that survived." Rose frowned sadly. "But I'm glad you're alive, Bion. And happy. Maybe you'll remember more someday. But I don't want you to stop being happy."

Bion watched Rose thoughtfully, she didn't seem as sad anymore, perhaps he'd said something right? Still, she seemed a little...down about something. When she mentioned Taku, his ears pricked and his gaze became curious. 'Well...Why did I recognise him if he was a Falling Moon?' he asked, still not understanding why she was speaking to him as if she had been an important part of his life...
'And how do I know you?' he asked, trying to seem as un-rude as possible. He was just confused about lots of things, and it would be so much easier if she just told him the truth about who he used to be.

Rose hesitated.
One one hand, she could just come right out with it. I'm your mother, Bion. Even if you don't remember it, I am your mother and I've been missing you so much it's torn little holes in my heart. And he would be in agony because he couldn't remember and he didn't understand, he would start hurting and he wouldn't be happy anymore.
On the other hand, she could lie. Like she always did. She could feel a cold sort of numbness spreading through her system, and she knew that when Bion went away after this reunion (which was no reunion to him), the numbness would engulf her and she would sink into her misery. But he would be happy. Wasn't that all that mattered, anyway?
"I'm..." she stopped, consulted him once more, and then sighed in defeat. She looked down. "A family friend. A Moons wolf."
She looked up again, frowning, and felt her cuts stinging. Stupid Myu. Stupid Duke. Stupid amnesia. Ugh, could this get any worse? She managed to keep a straight, blank face.
"It's probably a good thing you've forgotten. You'll be happier that way," she said softly, sadly, and above all truthfully. "But... if you ever remember, Bion. If you remember me, Rose, like you used to... you might not want to come and tell me. But if you do remember, please howl or meet me or... something. Just so I know."
She swallowed hard, and moved forwards, bumping her nose gently into her son's cheek affectionately. She was no more than a stranger to him. With that passing thought, she turned and limped away to try and find some water to cool her cuts in. But the tears in her heart were the ones hurting the most, and no amount of water would wash them away.
