In the sloped clearing, there was little to absorb the intense light of the sun, and a lot to reflect it. Craggy ledges of soil made perfect sunbathing spots where the steep slopes had eroded. The ledges were cushioned by grass that had been leached of all energy by the heat that tumbled eagerly away from the summer sun, although wolves had to be careful which spot they chose to perch upon in case the compact earth should fall away beneath them.
One such wolf had found the perfect resting place. Her head rested contentedly on her delicate paws, divine eyes closed to the world as she enjoyed a moment of blissful serenity and empty thoughts. The rich sunlight shined extravagantly on her golden, sleek pelt, almost as if surrounding her body in a halo of light. As much as she might have looked like an angel however, she certainly wasn't one; no divine creature would have such a shallow mind.
And who would want to disturb such a peaceful, gorgeous day as this, by thinking too hard? Thought Tallulah smugly.

Rose was, of course, an expert at being whoever she was supposed to be around whoever was around her. A flawless actress, she could flip mood in a split second and leave people wondering just how her mind worked. She couldn't say she loved it, but she could say that it came in very, very handy at times like this.
Times like when she'd wander into the sloped clearing, looking for some enjoyable company perhaps, and run into her sister. Smug little Tallulah with her smug little face. Ugh.
Don't get me wrong, Rose did love Tallulah. She was family- she was surviving family, therefore she had a special place in Rose's heart. It just happened to be very, very deep down. She could love and not like her, right? She shook her head slightly to change her expression- conversational and sisterly. "Hello, Tal," she smiled as she trotted down beside her, sitting gently.

Internally, Tallulah let out a small sigh. Fantastic, Rose, daddy's girl. As much as Tallulah loved Rose, for being her sister, she found it obvious that Duke obviously favoured Rose far more than her recently - which Tallulah did not like.
Tallulah had always been a daddy's girl, ever since she was born. Then, the earthquake happened, and all of a sudden it was Rose and Duke, Duke and Rose. Why was that? Tallulah had survived the earthquake too.
Not bothering to open her pretty eyes but fixing a pretty smile upon her pretty face, Tallulah responded, "Rose. How's my lovely sister?" Not that Tallulah cared excessively much anway, she was essentially a shallow being.

Rose sometimes wondered, if Duke and her were not somehow tied like lifelines to each other, would he grow sick of her constant lying? She was sure that sometimes he preferred Tallulah- after all, Duke and his youngest daughter were definitely more on the same mental wavelength. After all, Tallulah wasn't stupid, she was just... shallow, right?
Seeing that she wasn't opening her eyes, Rose let her face twist in unhappiness. She'd never wish her smarts away, but it made talking intelligently with anyone difficult. She hadn't missed Tallulah's little sigh, and it already irked her. Why hadn't she just walked away?
"Wonderful, Tallulah," Rose replied sweetly, inside her mind the words echoing a double timbre. The other side was dry and sarcastic. Quick, talk about something she'll be interested in. "What have you been up to?"
It was always best, when around Tallulah, to make yourself sound genuinely interested in Tallulah. Or it would be pretty much a one-sided conversation. Rose sat patiently, waiting for her younger sister.
