I'm swimming in
a sea of
people who's waves are
crashing down on me
It was nice to see the river finally thawed out. Every time Akiko crossed paths with it in the frozen months, she'd felt so sad and lonely, staring at it. It made her feel trapped.
The yearling stood at the banks, the waves lapping at her toes as she quenched her thirst. She was thinking of how she'd lived through her first year of life - her first Winter - and probably the hardest year she'd ever go through. The stress of the pack suddenly losing Caden was nothing compared to the realization that she'd been abandoned by both of her parents. They were both strangers to her now. Her father had left before they'd had a chance to do much of anything together. She'd never even been able to experience their first hunt as a team. And then her mother... For some reason, she felt the absence of her mother even more vividly.
Her mind was always wandering to Drake. She was no longer a pup by Nature's standards, but there were times when she felt like nothing more than a love-sick adolescent. Truthfully, she found herself aching for his company at almost all times. He had become a crutch for her. He may be intimidating at first, but he was so smart and so thoughtful; talking to him was like a breath of fresh air for her. It was probably a passing crush, but she felt that he was what had gotten her through her internal identity struggles.
The breeze was still cool at times, but the sun was shining bright on her pelt, and she felt so warm. If only she could feel contentedness, too. But there were so many things in her life that were left unresolved! She felt her feelings starting to fade into a sort of numbness. She still found that life could be enjoyable, though. There were many things still to see, and she wanted to experience them. As she ceased her drinking she lifted her head and stared across the river, to the borders of No Man's Land. Somewhere out there, she knew her mother was now wandering, finding a better life without her daughter and ex-mate. Akiko dreaded the day she had to see either of them again. She hoped to avoid, if possible.
And even when I
am all alone
it doesn't matter
You'll go where the wind blows
a sea of
people who's waves are
crashing down on me
