call me a safe bet
I'm betting I'm not
I'm glad that you can forgive
only hoping as time goes
you can forget
I'm betting I'm not
Lack of sleep was becoming a very real problem for Bion. In the past few days he'd be disturbed by nightmares that were becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from reality, and he was so preoccupied with the problems at hand that sleeping was becoming less and less likely. There was a thick layer of dirt embedded in his fur, and it was starting to show signs of matting. His puffy eyes were bloodshot and dull. He could barely walk in a straight line.
To top it off, he was in the middle of No Man's Land. He couldn't remember why he'd wandered away from the pack lands, or how long he'd been here, but his head was killing him and he was about to collapse with exhaustion. He didn't care where. Fortunately, or as fortunate as Bion could be in his current state; he was in a forest, and he had enough sense left to search blearily for a somewhere safe. The safest place he found were the overgrown roots of a large tree, and he wasn't in a position to be fussy. Using the little energy he had left, he crawled beneath the tangled roots. It was quite tight, but the closeness was almost comforting. Then the shivering overcame him, and then he fell into a fitful sleep.
The next thing he knew, he was in a den. It was small, but cosy, and smelt faintly of rabbits and blood. He was surrounded by laughter, and black and white fur. There were pups, and he was fond of them. He tried to look at their faces but they were hidden from him. He was happy, content. He was a young; younger than he could remember being. When he turned around he saw Rose, and she was smiling fondly at all of them. Bion called her mother.
When he turned back around, there was only one pup. It was sat on the other side of the den, with its head down. Bion wondered if it was crying, and wandered over to it. But as he moved closer, the pup got bigger, and bigger, and bigger, until it wasn’t a pup any more. It filled nearly half the den. It looked up, and the room seemed to fill with cold air that chilled him to the bone. It was Duke, and he was snarling, moving toward Bion as if he were prey. But Bion couldn’t run, he could only close his eyes and brace himself-
For an attack that never came. When he opened his eyes again he was stood looking down into the gurgling waters of a river. Again, what he saw made him jump back in fear. It was Duke’s face that was staring back at him. Or so he thought. He forced himself to look back, and the swirling water distorted the image. When it cleared, he saw something even more terrifying than Duke. It was himself. Crying out in panic, Bion turned and ran away from the water's edge as fast as his legs could carry him, into a dark forest where the trees were jagged and bare. He didn’t know how long he’d been running before he tripped, landing in the roots of one of the trees and getting tangled. His vision blurred, but he was sure the roots were growing; extending; wrapping themselves around him. He cried out again, this time for Rose, and Taya, and Esmerelda, even his children, and tried desperately to claw his way free. The forest was laughing at him, though, and tears filled his eyes. He would die here. Here, with no friends and no comforting last thought.
The laughter began to fade, though, his vision became a little clearer, and the roots a little easier to untangle himself from. Eventually, he scrambled out from the clutches of the tree, and tried to stand up. He failed. The world began to spin, and he collapsed against the tree trunk. The dizziness was overwhelming, and without warning he began to retch. His eyes were still stinging and he was still shivering, but after emptying the contents of his stomach he began to feel a little better. Unable to stand up, he leaned uncomfortably on the tree, and began to try and sort his nightmares from reality. Strange thoughts were filling his mind, familiar scenes much like the one with Rose and the pups. Frustrating, he shook his head, but they wouldn't budge.
And then he realised: they were memories. And that was way too much for him to handle.

ooc: this thread is open, but Taya or someone in Bion's family would be particularly welcome ^^
